Esther's Name

I knew Esther's name was a little controversial for reasons summed up by a conversation I had with a 5-year girl at the playground today.

Girl: "What's her name?"
Me: "Esther"
Girl: "That's a funny name for a girl."
Me: "Well it's not really a common name for a boy either."
Girl's mom: "It's just not a name you've heard before. You don't hear it much these days."
Girl: "Don't you think Rose would be better?"
Me: "Well not really. Her full name is Esther Yvonne Angel."
Girl: "Maybe you could call her Rose for short."

I hope she grows up and loves her name. It will be unique, but not unheard of. I had a great friend named Esther growing up and Andy's amazing grandmother is named Esther, so she has plenty of great history in her name.
I think it's uniquely beautiful and classy. I also think that she will make her name beautiful, it almost doesn't matter what name you are given, because the person you become shapes what the name means to people.

So I am pleased with it. But I do hope that people do not constantly misspell it.

This is an Ester

And this is an Esther

  1. I absolutely love the name Esther and you are so right . . .she already has made her name beautiful! Personally, I think less familiar names are wonderful - as is probably obvious given my children's names. :)

  2. I used to dislike my name, because it was uncommon. Now I love it, for that reason. She will grow into it, and make it lovely.
