Babies

Esther loves babies more than any other toddler I've ever seen.
We had a baby visit last night, she would bounce him in the bouncy chair, insist on holding him ('my turn, my turn'), she wanted to wrap him in a blanket, and change his diaper. She would even talkto him in a falsetto voice.
But the best part was after she saw the mom breastfeeding. I got to hold the baby for a while after that and she chased me around with her dress above collarbone, holding her nipple out to the baby and crying that I wouldn't let her 'feed' him.

Up all night

Esther has not been sleeping well lately. She used to be the best sleeper 12-13 hours a night, now we're luckily if we get 9.

I don't remember taking this picture, but I found it on my phone, either an early morning or a late night.

Raspberries

Last night we went over to Kyle's house for dinner. Kyle and Thomas are in town for just about one more week before they head back to the remote village of Teller for another season of teaching.

Van biked, he was the first to arrive.
Andy walked, carrying a bowl of line and cilantro rice to go with the salmon Kyle and Thomas were preparing.
I walked, carrying a baking sheet of fresh chocolate chip cookies.
Esther biked and cried, because she couldn't eat the cookies I was carrying.

I distracted her from the cookies by picking raspberries off the bushes on the sides of the road and feeding them to her.

Pretty soon the distraction was too effective and she had to stop and eat some herself.

Lotion application

Taking advantage of Esther's lotion addiction

Bunk bed

The kids got a new bunk bed.

Here is the old sleeping arrangement (in action).

Buying the new bed

And here is the fancy new set up.

And a guest bed in the old room.

Come visit!

Bike ride

Van can bike around the neighborhood by himself now. I wait in the driveway and sometimes I time him. He's done it a few times in the last month so I feel pretty comfortable with it. Today he wanted to try a new route and drop books off at our neighborhood book box. I sent him with my cell phone and a backpack full of books and I told him to call me if he got lost.

He called about 1 minute after he left the house.
He chatted for a while, saying things were great, they were good in fact, they were perfect. He was just checking in. But if I wanted, I could come along.

Me: "Sure I'll come along, just come back home and get me"
Van: "Well I can't quite remember which way to go."
Me: "Ok hold tight, I'll come get you"

So I biked out to meet him and we went to the book box together.

Van told me biking low like this makes him go faster. "Hey maybe I'll try it on the uphills" he says.

Happy face.

Mad face.

"let me see the mad one!" he says. He's a fun man.

Doughnut

Van said he was going to make me a doughnut.
He arrived with a dinner roll, that he had stuck his finger through the middle, covered in Hershey's chocolate syrup, and topped with orange sprinkles. I would show you a picture, but I ate it, and it was delicious.

Manitoba Cabins

We spent Saturday night at Manitoba Cabins, which is 2 yurts for sleeping and a shared kitchen building. Our friends the Smiths rented one yurt which we shared with them, while the other yurt was rented out by another party.

Here are some pictures from our adventure.
Here we are in the truck, loaded up.

We made it to the pull off; here is Naomi ready to hike.
You can tell who was sliding down the hill.
 Claire getting the girls ready.

 Esther on a bridge.

All the kids by the fire: Lance, Naomi, Esther and Van.

Inside the yurt.

A view of the yurt from the outside.

The rocks nearby.

We tried for a hike but this is all they wanted to do.

A little off roading.

The creek behind the yurt was beautiful but it meant the kids couldn't go out of sight.

Everyone helps when building a fire.

The kids throwing rocks in the water.

Claire is making Denali dogs. String cheese, pepperoni and Franks.

Then we started trying to get the kids to bed, an event that lasted 2 hours.

Esther and Van not sleeping.

Van was the first to go to sleep an hour in, he's like an on and off switch.

First thing in the morning, everyone is tired.

We went to get water for washing the breakfast dishes.

Van helping with the water retrieval operation.

More rocks in the river.

The crew packed up and heading back to the car.

This one is very tired.

We did stop in Girdwood on the way home and Van and I played on the skate park while Esther napped, but by this time my phone was almost dead so I didn't take many pictures.

Then we hiked the Winner Creek trail, and took the hand tram across the river, but by then my phone died. Here are a couple last shots of us heading down the trail.

We had a really fun weekend, and luckily the kids slept in on Monday morning.
