Immunizations

Immunizations are in the news now with the recent measles outbreak. Or at least it's all over my newfeed on Facebook.
We are doing immunizations for the kids on the suggested schedule; but I don't have a strong opinion about it. I haven't done independent research on the topic. I just understand the basic concept and I'm hoping this is a good decision.

Anyway, despite the fact that I have no strong feelings on the issue, this is the funniest thing I've read on the debate so far.

2/5/2015

Van: "Mom what if you could do whatever you wanted all the time"
Me: "It wouldn't be as much fun as you think."
Van: "Why?"
Me: "Well by doing fun things every once in a while, that is what makes them fun. If you did them all the time, you'd get tired of them. Everything has trade-offs, but you will get to decide what you want to do when you grow up."
Van: "Is it fun being a grownup?"
Me: "Yeah"
Van: "Why?"
Me: "Well, I like that I get to have a job, and I like that I get to have kids like you and I like being married to daddy."
Van: "But mom, you can't marry daddy too much, or it won't be fun anymore."
Me: "Good point."

Musician

Van loves listening to pop music on the radio. In fact the other day he told me,
Van: "I think instead of digging up dinosaur bones when I get big, I'm going to be a singer"
Me: "Like on the radio?"
Van: "yeah."
Me: "We'll have to start up those piano lessons."

So in a related category, I need to have a recurring piece called, 'pop lyrics interpreted by a 5 year old'

Van: "Mom you know my favorite song, that exit song?"
Me: "Yeah"
He means the song, 'Don't' by Ed Sheeran. The album cover has an X on it. So Van calls it 'that exit song'.
Van: "That song says, 'A butt loves Jen'"
Me: "What? someone loves Jen?"
Van: "yeah. A butt."
Me: thinking...thinking...thinking..."OH, he says, 'a bottle of gin'"
Van: "oh"

Luckily he didn't ask what that is.

There was another time we were listening to the song 'Habits' by Tove Lo.
It's essentially about a girl trying to get over a breakup with drinking, drugs, and partying. Not a great song for kids, I know, but we were driving and I wasn't really thinking about it.
The chorus goes
'Gotta stay high, all the time to keep you off my mind'

Van: "She has to climb up really high to stay away from that person huh?"
Me: "yep."

The Megalodon Thunder Lions

Yesterday I went skiing with Finn, Van, and Cam. I met Peter and Zack at the Service trails and we split the kids up based on age and speed. Zack skied with his daughter Mira (3), Peter skied with Elin and Solvej (4), and I took the boys (5, 5, & 6).

Svea met us mid-way and asked the boys what they thought our mascot should be.
Finn: "Lions"
Cam: "Thunder"
Van: "Megalodon"

So Svea named us the Megalodon Thunder Lions.

They skied from Service all the way around the lighted loop, about 3 miles. There are some big hills in that loop; they did awesome.

Tali is staying over

Mom asked us to watch Tali during their trip to Hawaii. We are just doing the typical dog sitting jobs, we feed Tali twice a day.

Then Van and I get her primped and prepped for the day.

And she settles into some leisure activities. It's no surprise that she's an avid reader, but it may surprise mom and dad that she's become quite the Steeler's fan.

We'll have to invite her over for games next season.
